| 2006 Federal Telephone Tax Refund | ||
| Please be advised that McLeodUSA makes no representation as to any customer's eligibility for certain tax treatment with respect to previously paid federal excise taxes. Please check with your tax advisor.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is offering a refund of federal excise taxes paid on long-distance telephone service after Feb. 28, 2003, and before Aug. 1, 2006. Eligible individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations will claim this refund in their 2006 federal tax filings. Eligibility In general, any individual, business or nonprofit organization that paid long-distance tax for service billed after Feb 28, 2003 and before Aug 1, 2006 is eligible to request the refund. Businesses and Nonprofits Businesses and Nonprofits must submit IRS Form 8913 with their returns and base their refund requests on the actual amount of tax paid. Individual Taxpayers Individual taxpayers have a choice: 1) Submit Form 8913 with your return and base your refund request on the actual amount of tax paid, or, 2) Claim a standard deduction of between $30 and $60 directly on your return form (e.g., 1040, 1040EZ). The amount of the standard deduction depends on the number of exemptions you claim on your return. 'Your Account' Tax Lookup Tool Instead of manually reviewing 41 months of bills, McLeodUSA customers can use a tool on this site to look up the exact amount of federal long-distance excise tax they paid during the refund period and print records for their filings. (Current customers will access the tool by logging in to the Your Account portal, with former customers following a different process.) The IRS provides more information and instructions in its 2006 filing packets. You can review your monthly statements online with the Your Account portal from McLeodUSA. (First-time users complete a simple registration process.) |
